It is said that Baron Calafato once met an old hermit with long hair and a white beard. The man held in his hands a mysterious book, written in indecipherable characters, which spoke of a treasure hidden right beneath the hill of Sabucina.
Driven by greed, the baron decided to undertake the mission through tunnels and underground passages, where sinister noises, hot vapors, and indistinct moans echoed. Finally arriving in front of the chest, the baron filled his bags with gold coins and immense riches, except that he could no longer find the way out and remained trapped in the bowels of the hill.
Since then, on windy nights, farmers and travelers swear they hear screams coming from the underground.
It is not the wind in Sabucina.
They are the screams of Baron Calafato, condemned to eternal imprisonment.

The Meaning of the Legend
The legend of Baron Calafato holds a strong symbolic value.
The treasure of Sabucina does not represent only material wealth, but symbolizes the greed and obsession of man who, blinded by the desire to possess, ends up losing himself.
The hermit, with his mysterious book and arcane rituals, embodies the ambiguous wisdom that tests those who seek shortcuts to power. The element of the required sacrifice is instead the sternest warning: no wealth can be gained without an inhuman price.
The baron remains trapped in the tunnels as an eternal punishment, becoming a warning for future generations. His cries are not only those of a lost man, but the moral call against the boundless craving that leads to ruin.
In this way, the legend blends mystery, popular memory, and ethical teaching, making Sabucina not only an archaeological site, but also a treasure chest of stories that still speak to people today.
