The Story in Brief

Medusa was a splendid maiden, a priestess devoted to Athena’s temple. Her only fault was drawing the attention of the god Poseidon, who overwhelmed her in the very sacred place that should have protected her.

Instead of receiving comfort, Medusa suffered the wrath of the goddess Athena. Punished for the profanation of the temple, her marvelous hair was turned into a nest of snakes and her gaze condemned to petrify anyone, banishing her to an eternal solitude.

Hidden in the shadows at the edges of the world, harming no one, she became Perseus’ target. A hero armed by the gods, come to tear her life away and make of it a political trophy.

In archaic and Siceliot art, the Gorgon’s head (Gorgoneion) becomes a most powerful apotropaic symbol.

Medusa is placed on temple roofs and on the walls of ancient cities to frighten and drive off the forces of evil. A stone scream that, from a defenseless victim, turns her into the eternal protectress.
